A quick 3 things you should know before starting your fitness journey (or you may need to be reminded of!)

things to know when starting your fitness journey

1. It Doesn't Happen Overnight

We’ve all seen the articles and videos claiming that ‘this one trick will help you lose <insert body part> fat here within 7 days’

This is designed to grab your attention and feed into your insecurities; It’s purely clickbait. Avoid it, don’t click it, don’t buy it. Just know that treating your body with respect, nourishment and positive movement will build a strong, healthy body so you can live your life and do the things you love.

2. The Changes Happen on the Inside First

Your body is striving for a constant state of balance known as homeostasis which is why it is constantly adapting and changing on a cellular level. Right now, literally as you are reading this your body is repairing and growing tissues as well as breaking them down. Your blood vessels may be dilating allowing blood to flow closer to your skin to cool you down or they may be restricting to help to keep you warm. Even though you may not be aware that these things are happening, it doesn’t mean they aren’t.

Similarly, just because the number on the scale hasn’t changed or your clothes don’t yet feel looser, it doesn’t mean that your body isn’t benefitting hugely from adding exercise into your life.

Don’t give up!

3. You Can't Store Fitness

It’s a sad but true fact that you can’t store your fitness so you need to be consistent with your exercise. The World Health Organisation recommends the average adult needs 150 minutes of moderate exercise or 75 mins of vigorous exercise per week for good health. That the equivalent to 30 mins of moderate exercise 5 days per week or 15 mins of vigorous exercise 5 days per week.

It’s best to try and space out your workouts focusing on different parts of the body or working through strength one session and cardio the next for a well balanced fitness programme that will give you good lasting results.

So Where Do I Start?

If you are a complete beginner start slow and build up, just 10 minutes of exercise a day twice a week will be a good starting point. Aim to increase this to 3 times and then build up the time from there as your confidence and strength increases.

  1. Although we can’t store fitness, we can build heathy habits and make the body look forward to healthy exercise, instead of avoiding it and it being a pain ( leading to worse pain, as a lot of us know!) Thank you so much for helping so many of us do that with your videos. Can’t wait to do more.
